Tablets

Well, it looks like we’re getting closer to one of those Apple moments – the one where Steve Jobs slowly descends from the mountain and introduces the world to a new device that changes everything – at least that’s the general sense if you follow this type and this hype of thing – there are over 13 million references on the web to this as yet seen revelation. Yes folks, I’m referring to the elephant in the digital room, the Holy Grail in King Arthur’s notebook bag – the Apple Tablet (aka iSlate – who knows what it will ultimately be called).

I’ve held off commenting on this because nobody knows what this thing is going to be or do. Rumour mills are churning – it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s an iPhone on steroids! It has a camera! No, wait a minute, it doesn’t have a camera! Deals are being made with publishers, TV networks and newspapers. Bounties are being offered (I’m serious) for true pictures or videos – even one offering up to a $100,000 to play with one for an hour! Ridiculous.

Apple has booked a space at the Yerba Centre in San Francisco for January 26th – the day of the big reveal – with a commercial availability of the product in March. Much much more to come. I vow to only comment on it’s pre-release again if something truly worth sharing emerges. Until then, ssshhh!

rumours
So, many rumours are flying around the Mac-o-sphere with predictions of major product announcements this morning (the 20th):

New Airport Devices

New iMacs, MacMini Servers, new Plastic MacBooks and a tablet! VERY wishful thinking – we’ll see!

iPhone
For those of you who just need to know, the next generation iPhone specs are being leaked all over the place. In addition to the upcoming new iPhone 3.0 software there will be an actual new device with new features. The expected release date is July 17th and some of the specs are (bold represents brand new rumours):

  • 32GB and 16GB to replace current capacities
  • $199 and $299 price-points to be maintained
  • 3.2 Megapixel camera
  • Video recording & editing capabilities
  • Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
  • Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
  • OLED screen
  • 1.5X The battery life
  • Double the RAM and processing power
  • Built-in FM transmitter
  • Apple logo on the back to light up
  • Rubber-tread backing
  • Sleeker design
  • Built-in compass
  • Revolutionary combination of the camera, GPS, compass, and Google maps to identify photo and inform about photo locations.
  • Turn by turn directions
  • July 17th, 2009 release date

This looks like it will be addressing a lot of the issues/complaints users have had and make the iPhone an even better device to use. An OLED screen would be incredible and explain some of the extra battery life. I love the built-in FM transmitter idea and compass. The larger capacity would be welcomed and of course the faster processor. If you’re waiting to buy an iPhone I would definitely recommend holding out for the new one – you will have a much better experience and as always, get more for your money. Some people suspect that Apple may announce the new iPhones at the Apple World Wide Developers Conference. It’s anyone’s guess when the actual phones will appear, but the July date seems about right.

Loose Lips
For all of you who have been waiting to get an iPhone, holding off for those killer features you’ve been waiting for, the recent announcements concerning the upgrade to the iPhone OS must have pleased you. Something else that might entice you to wait and buy are the incredible rumours floating through the loose lips at AT & T as reported by Boy Genius:

We can’t tell you where or who, but pretty high up in AT&T’s food chain, the following was reported to be said:

  • New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh)
  • New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
  • U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
  • The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
  • Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
  • AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
  • Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?
  • They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
  • Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
  • The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.
This last point is pretty interesting. Of course, we’ll all have to wait and see. The website author points out that these leaks are 100% accurate and came from a contact high up in the AT & T hierarchy. It looks to be an exciting summer!

First pictures and now this. The Mac Mini redux:

rumours
The new year begins with, what else, Rumours! And why not, with MacWorld just a few days away it’s not surprising to see a flurry of leaks and speculation about what’s to come. Below are links to some of the freshest tidbits. Enjoy!

iMovie To Receive Update and move online!

iPhone Nano, smaller iPod Shuffles (is it possible?) and cheaper MacBooks?!

iWork to become a Web-based application?

New MacMinis!

Large Screen iPods Coming!?

Note: I’ll be attending this year’s MacWorld in San Francisco and experimenting with some live blogging from the conference floor, perhaps some video and certainly followups and summaries so stay tuned!

rumours
A somewhat interesting take on the future of MacWorld. It echos what I feel that is great about MacWorld – the chance to connect with colleagues, developers and friends, get ideas etc…and I loved his term – nerd out!

Also rumoured – an iPhone Nano?

 macmini
The rumour mills are spinning with the possibility of a Mac Mini refresh – probably to be announced at this year’s MacWorld. This bodes well for those wanting an inexpensive performance machine. The Mac Mini was originally directed at PC switchers who might own existing displays, keyboards and mice that could be used with this simple unit. 9 to 5 Mac reports on some of the possible details and specs. I’ll be attending MacWorld in San Francisco this January with some live blogging and updates from Steve Jobs’s keynote and the conference floor. Stay tuned for more details.

rumours
For those of you who just have to keep up to date on the imminent notebook announcements scheduled for tomorrow there is plenty of information here. It always amazes me how nutty the Mac community gets just before a major hardware event. I mean, it’s fun to speculate, but all will become clear shortly. Meanwhile, there is something on the order of 14000 posts to rumour sites all about the new machines, their case designs (gleaned from leaked pictures which may or may not be accurate etc…)! I will be following up on all the news tomorrow afternoon.

notebooks
The rumour mills were right as Apple has announced a Notebook event for October 14th (voting day in Canada!) with a cryptic:

The spotlight turns to notebooks

The event will begin 10am PST or 1pm Toronto time and all will be known about a half-hour later. Further rumours abound concerning a possible sub-$800 model - we’ll see. I will of course give a thorough overview of the day’s announcements so stay tuned!
