Well, as the recently released 10.5.3 update’s tentacles reach further into the public domain I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re all just endlessly beta testing software for all the vendors out there (and paying for it!). Some software out there (the recently released 5 Star MacAddict rated Drive Genius drive utility from Prosoft Engineering) claims one has to update to 10.5.3 for proper usage. Other reports claim the update is breaking functionality in other areas. If you use the plugin httpMail to get your Hotmail within Apple’s Mail program this will be broken in the update. See this note for a possible fix. I can’t emphasize enough the caution needed before applying updates to your system. Generally run a back up (a quick Time Machine update is sufficient if you’re running Leopard), and then, if you have time, research the major Mac news sites for Leopard news for early update adopter’s experiences (there will always be early adopters). I’ve posted some great links on a previous post.

    Hi there,

Great article- I did want to give some background info.

For Drive Genius 2, we do indeed require that you update to 10.5.3 before working on your SATA-based drives. This is because Apple fixed a known issue in Leopard that was present in 10.5.0- 10.5.2 ..

There are a few mentions of the SATA AHCI problem on developer pages, and there had been a lot of discussion about this for the past few months…The good news is that Apple has indeed fixed this (the fix is in 10.5.3)..

Until that fix was released, we in essence had to put safeguards into Drive Genius 2 that prevented users from coming across this Apple bug. Now that Apple has fixed this bug in the OS, we have released a free update which checks to see if you have 10.5.3 installed, and if so, allows work on the SATA drives… If you have Tiger installed, that works fine too. However, if you have 10.5.0- 10.5.2, you will need to update to 10.5.3 as that has the fix from apple that is needed-

In looking at 10.5.3, it is indeed surprising how many bugs/issues Apple fixed, and those fixes are indeed important for many applications.

If you or other readers have any questions at all, please give us a call or email–
